What is an Instagram competitor analysis?

An Instagram competitor analysis compares the public content of businesses serving similar customers. It helps a marketer, founder or agency see what each account talks about, how it presents the offer, and which posts receive visible interactions.

Useful comparisons use the same time window and sample rules. A large account, an older post or a giveaway can change the numbers without explaining what your team should do. Okou keeps that context visible and turns observed patterns into tests, with source posts and missing information attached.

What can you compare across Instagram accounts?

Focus on the public evidence that can inform your team's next decision.

  • Positioning and topics

Compare profile promises, recurring customer problems, product explanations and the themes each account emphasizes.

  • Formats and publishing

Review Reels, carousels and static posts within the same window. Separate the observed sample from a complete publishing record.

  • Visible engagement

Compare available likes, comments and views with consistent denominators, matching formats and clear sample limits.

  • Next-week actions

Turn specific reference posts into content briefs, positioning tests and questions to verify in your own analytics.

How to repeat the comparison consistently

Reuse the account list, sample rules and brief format when you choose to compare again. Explore workflows your team can adapt.

From a small comparison to two content tests

Fictional example: compare three desk-lamp brands using two unpinned posts each from the same seven-day window. All posts and figures below are invented; follower counts are captured at the same time.

Illustrative public post sample

A1 · Your brand · 5,000 followers
Feature-list carousel: 90 likes + 10 comments = 100 visible interactions.
A2 · Your brand · 5,000 followers
Product close-up Reel: 180 likes + 20 comments = 200 visible interactions.
B1 · Competitor B · 10,000 followers
Desk-light setup Reel: 240 likes + 20 comments = 260 visible interactions.
B2 · Competitor B · 10,000 followers
Setup-guide carousel: 320 likes + 20 comments = 340 visible interactions.
C1 · Competitor C · 3,000 followers
Desk-makeover Reel: 120 likes + 15 comments = 135 visible interactions.
C2 · Competitor C · 3,000 followers
Lamp-placement carousel: 160 likes + 5 comments = 165 visible interactions.

Example comparison and next-week plan

  1. Compare the same format

For the carousels A1, B2 and C2, visible interactions are 100, 340 and 165. Each account has only one carousel in this sample, so these are individual observations, not reliable format averages.

  2. Put account size beside the numbers

Carousel interactions ÷ captured followers × 100 gives A1: 2.0%, B2: 3.4%, C2: 5.5%. This public ratio adds context; it does not measure reach, unique people or sales.

  3. Draft two practical content tests

Tuesday: a desk-light setup Reel, inspired by the topics in B1 and C1. Thursday: a lamp-placement carousel, informed by B2 and C2. Compare with A2 and A1 respectively; review both briefs before publishing.

  4. Measure the test at the same age

Capture each new post's public interactions seven days after publication. Check your own Insights for reach and saves before judging business value. This six-post sample cannot establish that a topic or format caused better results.

Illustrative data only. For example, C2 is 165 ÷ 3,000 × 100 = 5.5%. Post age, distribution and promotions can affect comparisons. No content has been published or scheduled.

Instagram competitor analysis FAQs

How many Instagram accounts can I compare?

Start with your own public account and up to three competitors. The default prompt uses up to 12 recent unpinned posts per account from the same 30-day window and reports a smaller sample when fewer posts are accessible.

Do I need the competitors' Instagram logins?

No. This comparison uses accessible public profiles and posts. It cannot open private accounts or their Instagram Insights. If a source is unavailable, the report should state that gap rather than fill in its data.

How is public engagement compared?

The report can compare visible likes plus comments across similar post formats. If public follower counts are available, it can show (likes + comments) ÷ captured followers × 100 as an additional ratio. Missing likes or follower counts stay missing. Views use a separate denominator, and none of these measures establishes reach, sales or audience quality.

Can it reveal competitor reach, saves or audience demographics?

No. Those details are generally private. This tool does not estimate them or label followers as fake. It can list the questions your team should verify with authorized analytics or evidence supplied by the account owner.

Is this comparison free, and will it publish the plan?

The page, prompt and illustrative example are free to explore. Running a comparison requires sign-in to Okou and available credits. The result is a research brief and draft plan; the tool does not publish, send or schedule content.

Okou also has the instagram profile analyzer, the instagram comment analyzer, the engagement rate calculator and the influencer profile audit.
